Six Painless Ways to Save Plenty of Water💧

Rapid increase in global population + Decrease of freshwater resource + Water mismanagement & wastage + Uncontrolled pollution = Threat to the very survival of Human race on earth.

Isn't it imperative that we undertake serious measures IF we wish to extend human life on this planet? Let's start it small - right from our own household.

1. Fix Dripping Faucets 

The bathroom is the place of the greatest indoor water use in the house.
Leaks waste water 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Did you know that a dripping tap can waste enough water to fill a bath tub every week, nearly 32 litres / day. 
In most cases, all it requires is an inexpensive washer, which is more than sufficient to stop such leaks.

2. Detect Leaky Toilets

Even the smallest leaks in your Toilet can waste 500 litres of water/day. 
Periodic checks can easily detect any invisible leak. Simply add a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. Even without flushing once, if the color begins to appear in the toilet bowl, it means you have successfully investigated a leak in your Toilet.

3. Reduce Toilet Flushes

Single flush of a Toilet uses 9 litres of water; 15 times per day 135 litres /day. 
Make use of modern day, dual flush smaller tanks to conserve water used abundantly in this fashion. Incase you have bigger tanks, 1 plastic bottle can save nearly 18 litres of water each day, without harming the efficiency of the toilet.
Take one litre plastic bottle and put 1 or 2 inches of sand/pebbles in the bottom. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and place it in your toilet tank, away from the operating mechanism. Simple

4. Fill Automatic Washers

A standard washing machine uses 100 litres of water to wash an average sized load, but an Energy Star certified washing machine uses less 55 - 70 litres of water, saving of 22,000 litres of water per year for an average family.
Similarly an Energy Star certified dishwasher can save almost 11 litres of water/load. This amounts to almost 18,000 litres of water per year. Just make sure you run both your automatic washers only when they are full. Save a staggering amount of water in the process.

5. Limit Showering Time

In an average home, showers are typically the third largest water use after toilets and clothes washers.
Showering accounts for almost 17% of household water use - a minimum of 10 litres of water/minute; 8 minutes a day 400 litres / day.
Way 1: The best way to conserve water spent showering, is to use a Water-Saving shower head.
Way 2: Limit your showers to the time it takes to soap up, wash down and rinse off. Aim to finish all these steps in 5 minutes or less.

6. Stop Running Taps

By not running taps while shaving or brushing your teeth, you can save up to 750 litres of water/month. Is it not a very surprising quantity? Let's start saving water right now -
Step 1: Before brushing, wet your brush.
Step 2: While brushing, turn off the tap.
Step 3: After brushing, fill a glass for rinsing mouth. Well done!

Thanks to the hot & humid weather conditions, Breakbone fever is spreading like wildfire. No Vaccines. What is our best bet? Plain old PREVENTION.

One simplest step to prevent Dengue is to Fight the Bite. Only personal protection and the environmental management of mosquitoes can aid in preventing this  illness.

Personal Protection

Avoid visiting areas prone to mosquitoes. If you will be in an areas with many mosquitoes, consider using the following clothing tips.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  • Wear socks and tuck your pants into socks.
  • Wear light-colored clothing, since mosquitoes are more attracted to darker colors.
  • Apply mosquito repellent to your clothing, shoes. 
  • You can also apply mosquito repellant on your skin during day/night/while going out of the house.
Consider using mosquito netting, for your bedding, windows and doors.

Environmental Management

  • Prevent mosquito breeding inside and outside your home. Spray insecticide in dark corners in your home. 
  • Get rid of stagnant water. Never let wet waste accumulate in your home.
  • Shut all the doors and windows and light camphor in a room and let the smoke stay for about fifteen to twenty minutes. 
  • Grow basil shrubs near your windows. Basil's natural insecticidal properties keep mosquitoes away.
  • Using Lavender oil as a natural room freshener to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Facts about Dengue

Dengue is spread by the vector Aedes aegypti mosquito and can be caused by one of the 4 dengue viruses. Once you get infected with the dengue virus, you develop resistance to it and become immuned to it for the rest of your life.

But here's the catch - You can still be infected by the 3 other viruses. There's also the possiblity to get infected by all 4 viruses in your lifetime. Watta fun!

High fever, headaches, pain behind the eyes, joint pain, skin rash, fatigue, nausea and vomiting are some symptoms of dengue. These symptoms may start appearing within 3-4 days of the virus entering your body and stay for about a minimum of 10 days.

If you think you might have dengue fever, you should rest, drink plenty of fluids, and get your blood tested by your doctor. All preventive measures can help you control mosquitoes effectively but then today mosquitoes are here, there and everywhere around us.

What foods to Eat in Dengue?

Oranges

Orange is a nutrient dense fruit is filled with fiber, essential vitamins and minerals. It’s especially high in Vitamin C, a very important antioxidant needed by the body during recovery.

Coconut Water

Dengue results in major dehydration. Body needs lots of hydrating and relaxing fluid intake like coconut water. This has more nutrients & electrolytes to flush out toxins, thereby aiding you to recover faster.

Papaya Leaves

The dengue virus can cause rapidly falling blood platelets count. 30ml of fresh papaya leaf juice helps in increasing the platelet count and, therefore, helpful in the treatment of dengue.

Pomegranate

Pomegranate is a great source of iron, than can help maintain the blood platelets count. This can help your body improve faster.

Spinach

Spinach is rich in vitamins, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. In addition to boosting the immune system, it helps recover faster from the infection.

Basil Leaves

What foods to avoid in Dengue?

Although there aren’t specific foods to avoid during this illness, some types are best when kept at a bay.

Oily/Fried food

A lot of fat may lead to high blood pressure and cholesterol levels that can put a damper on your road to recovery by weakening your immune system. So opt for a lighter diet rather than oily food.

Spicy Food

Spicy Food can cause acid to collect in the stomach, leading to ulcers and wall damage. This could in turn hinder the recovery process as your body will have to be fighting double the illnesses.

Caffeinated beverages

Caffeinated beverages should be avoided at all costs because they cause rapid heart rate, fatigue, caffeine crashes, and muscle breakdown.

Caution

While home remedies can effectively contain the Dengue fever, do not rely on them for too long. If you begin to feel worse in the first 24 hours after your fever goes down, you should rush to a hospital immediately and get checked for complications.

Are the Reviews on Amazon India Real? Growing Danger!

There's been a massive up-tick in the number of fraud reviews and the fake review problem is now worse than ever.


Sites like Amazon, TripAdvisor, Airbnb etc, have become highly successful based on the trust created by their review systems. In order to boost sales, few sellers on Amazon now either opt to purchase reviews or offer free samples in exchange for “honest” review. This has deeply skewed the rating system thereby creating artificially inflated product ratings.

What are fake reviews? 

Reviews posted either by company's employees themselves or by anyone with a vested interest in selling more products or by some competitor trying to bring down the product sales.
  •  Had the review been written by a friend, the review body may contain descriptions like wonderful, value for money, suits everyone etc., and the reviewer may insinuate that they're also planning to purchase it for someone they know.
  •  If the review had been written by an enemy, the product may contain crude descriptions like pathetic, poor, or a waste of money. The reviewer may recommend an alternate product ("has more credibility") that they liked better.

Rampant Fake reviews

All promised efforts by Amazon, to start tracking and removing incentivized reviews posted in exchange for free or discounted products, have sent the problem underground. Fake reviews are still rampant, but are now harder to detect. The above picture is a snapshot of an offer issued to me by an Amazon seller.

My case
I received this offer when I purchased a ladies backpack after thoroughly checking the review(Verified) ratings. Needless to say, the backpack was faulty. Now I highly doubt the credibility of all 5 star ratings given to the product because of this offer announcement, that came neatly folded inside the Amazon packaging.
Here comes my question - Does Amazon support this?
  • If Yes, how can we expect a honest rating from someone who reviews purely for the purpose of getting the Cashback? 
  • If No, how come this product package was not suspected to Amazon quality checks(Prime product)? 
I raised the same question to Amazon support team and got a reply that my report has been elevated to the concerned department and that my refund can be issued if needed. Yes, I definitely need my refund. Shouldn't the actions taken after my report be transparent? Amazon.in should definitely see to that.

How to spot a Fake review?

This incident led me to research about ways to spot a fake review. Being a shopaholic, this is essential to me and it would be useful to other online shopping addicts I guess. So here is what I gathered,

1. Check review tool 

Make use of sites like Reviewmeta.com and Fakespot.com analyze reviews for any product listed on shopping platforms and give a rating for the reviews authenticity. Read reputable review websites.

2. Analyze reviews balance 

If a product is exceptionally good/exceedingly bad, the product ratings are nearly exclusively either one star/five stars. A best product generally has a healthy mix of 5 and 4 star reviews, with some 3 stars thrown in.

3. Trust middle reviews 

If the product is generally good, the ratings might have a bell-shaped curve. This is mainly because "One cannot please everyone".  Generally disregard the highest and lowest ratings. Mostly see what people in the middle have to say. This should give you a more accurate assessment of the product.

Help fellow consumers

Report suspicious reviews

Take a look at the suspect's - One 🌟 reviews. If a review includes spam/offensive language contrary to Amazon.com's review policies, please click the link to "Report Abuse" (near "Was this review helpful to you?"). This allows us to "Report this content as inappropriate". Do include the reason for your suspicion. This will help Amazon staff to evaluate the concerned review and take appropriate action.

Apply critical thinking

Whether or not you share a reviewer's opinions of the product, consider it, especially if the review is thoughtful and well-written. Even people who disagree with you may have valid points. Those reviews definitely warrant a "Helpful" click.

Leave helpful feedback 

Your feedback about a particular review can help others who are reading reviews. If you decide that a review is helpful, find the line nearby that reads "Was this review helpful to you?" Click "Yes."  If you decide that the review may have a hidden agenda, click "No". This action of yours can help either raise/lower that review's status.

The verdict of an Online addict(myself) - Please don't blindly believe anything/everything you see online. Kindly use your analytical mind - Be it your shopping spree on Amazon or simple time pass of surfing the internet.

How Sitting can KILL you? YES! It can & It does.

Person A may have low body fat. He may possess excellent strength and stamina. He may be a teetotaler who never smokes. He may eat healthy and take omega-3’s and multivitamins regularly. But Is Mr.A fit and healthy? NOT necessarily!
Research has linked prolonged sitting time with a cluster of health concerns, including obesity, increased blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist & abnormal cholesterol levels. No matter how much you exercise, eat well, avoid smoking, or add other healthy habits, excessive sitting more than six hours a day greatly increases your risk of an early death. 

Did you know that chronic sitting could be compared with smoking and has a similar mortality rate! Prolonged sitting seems to increase the risk of death from Cardiovascular disease and CANCER.

Effects Exposed -

Let's define Sedentary Lifestyle(SeL) as taking fewer than 3000 steps/day.
  • SeL is associated with a 112 percent increased risk of diabetes. Researchers studied the effects of just 5 days of bed rest and found increased insulin resistance, a precursor condition to diabetes.
  • People who spend more time sitting also have a  147 percent increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Recent research points out that men who spent more than 23 hours per week watching TV had a 64 percent greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than men who watched TV only for 11 hours. 
  • Below data relates positive associations between cancer risk and SeL - 
    • – Lung cancer risk increases by 54 percent.
    • – Uterine cancer risk increases by 66 percent.
    • – Colon cancer risk increases by 30 percent.
Scary! Isn't? The solution seems to be simple - Less sitting and More moving. After all, Human body was designed to move.

Sitting vs Walking

Sitting actually puts stress on your entire kinetic chain, leading to muscular imbalances like tight hip flexors, rounded shoulders, and a forward neck. It can cause breathing problems and put severe stress on your lower back.

The impact that Movements can introduce on your body, can be profound. For starters, you'll start burning more calories. Eg: Walking might lead to weight loss and increased energy overall. Standing and other movements seem to trigger essential processes like breakdown of fats and sugars within our body. 

Make Walking your daily Routine

Try implementing small changes in your routine. Find ways to add steps to your daily routine. Start by simply standing rather than sitting whenever you have the chance. Think about ways to walk while you work. Ideally we need to focus on taking at least 5,000 steps every day and gradually increase it to 10,000 steps.

Try Counting your every Step

Buying a fitness tracking device like Fit bit is definitely a healthy idea (Tracks not only your steps but also gives suggestions regarding the quantity and quality of your sleep). Be sure you are taking at least 5,000 steps daily because fewer steps suggest Sedentary Lifestyle. Aim for a minimum of 7,000 steps but the optimal average lies between 7,000 and 10,000. 

In fact, a daily target of 10,000 steps, is a solid healthy lifestyle habit.

Dear Prime minister,
I am a mother living in India. I had always believed that my child has the right to live her childhood without fear! But Hasini's fate changed everything.

Child Abuse & Molestation - Spreading Epidemic

Physical and sexual abuse of our children gets reported on TV, in newspapers and on the internet on a daily basis. Child abusers continue to run rampant in our society. Time and place of incidents do not matter here because this is an epidemic spreading across our country (more precisely all around the globe).

Our Children are Losing their Innocence

As a Mother, I live everyday in constant fear for my child's safety and well being. Even going to and coming from school is no longer a routine, I happen to live in a state of constant fear.

Will my child come home from school without getting exposed to "BAD TOUCH"?
or
Will my child be free of the "EVIL EYE" of strangers? 
Having to teach "Good Touch" and "Bad Touch" to my innocent child, I strongly fear if I am ushering my child into an Ugly grown-ups world very soon.

Child Abuse exists - Hiding does it no Help

We public are a little surprised that in a grand country like ours with so many illustrious personalities, not once did one such personality come forward to fight for the safety of our children. Media has all the time to endlessly debate on how the latest commercial movie of an XYZ actor is doing, or how they perfected the red carpet walk, but something vitally important as child safety gets shoved into the inside pages of a Newspaper.

Stats about Child Abuse are Bone-Chilling

The World Health Organisation reports that India is the home to largest number of sexually abused children. We seem to be sliding into a passive acceptance of our situation today and that is the scariest part of all!
In 2007, the Ministry of Women and Child Development made these shocking revelations:
  • • 1 in 2 children reported having faced one or more forms of sexual abuse. 
  • • 8 children in India are subject to Child Sexual Abuse everyday. 
  • • Every 5th Child is subjected to severe forms of sexual abuse (direct sexual assault, making the child fondle private parts, making the child exhibit private body parts and being photographed in the nude).
  • • Every 155th minute, one child below 16 years of age is raped in India
  • • A child below 10 years of age is raped every 13th hour
  • • 50% abusers are persons known to the child or in a position of trust and responsibility (family member, close relative, friend or neighbour).

We are worried. We're ready to Act on it..

In a country as great as ours, we are still taking a backseat and letting sick perverts get away with this kind of heinous crime. I write this petition because we need to move beyond the sham sympathy and get into the real action mode. With every second child at risk of abuse, it is time to act and protect India’s children. Our children deserve a better India.

Dear Prime Minister, Please Help us..

As a Mother, I ask and urge the Prime minister of this country not to keep shoving all other problems of India above my child's safety. India’s daughters are at stake. All I ask you is to take a mere look at the rapidly escalating pace of abuse cases especially against children. Convicted pedophiles deserve severe punishment, or else we will lose more child victims to these criminals.

If someone deserves Ruthless punishments, Pedophiles do.

We need a Law as strong as possible (like enforcing chemical castration) against pedophiles. While the law against child sexual abuse, the Protection of Children of Sexual Offences Act, 2013 is well intentioned, any small holes in the law can allow a psycho (a child abuser) walk free and he is a potential threat to every Indian child he walks past.

Dear fellow Parents,

Until we create truly ruthless laws for this kind of crime, and fast, I feel we will have to clutch our daughters closer to us than let them live an innocent childhood they truly deserve!

Entire Tamil Nadu has stood up today unanimously to save our cultural symbolism of the Bull. Men, Boys, Women, Girls and even Kids are all fighting for our Identity.

We Adjust - We Adopt 

Visit Odisha, you are expected to speak in Oddissi. Visit any of the Hindi-belt, you will be forced to speak Hindi. Visit France, you may have to learn French. Only the people of Tamil Nadu are consistent and closest to actualizing the peaceful philosophy of India.
NEW YORK TIMES listed Tamilnadu at 24th place in The Best 50 places to see around the World and we stand as the only state representing India. This is an account of a Foreigner who visited India.

I have never found a people more courteous, helpful, kind, warm and very welcoming than the people of Tamil Nadu! Everywhere I went, most people offered to help me, without my even asking for it and they all spoke to me in English (perfect or rudimentary). 

TAMIL - The Best Heritage 

Only two classical languages remain in use today - Chinese and Tamil. Tamil is the 15th most spoken language in the world and we make up 1% of the world’s population. We've got 77 million native speakers in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Mauritius, Myanmar and Malaysia. Tamil is one of the Official Languages of Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. We're immensely proud of our language and our heritage but we never force it on others unlike many other. Maybe this is the reason why we were neglected so long.

If Tamil people are Illustrious.. 

They are proudly branded Indian. Ramanujan was a great Indian mathematician. Sundar Pichai is the proud Google's Indian CEO. Abdul Kalam was a respected Indian scientist. AR.Rahman is an Oscar-Winning Indian Musician. S. R. Nathan is an Indian descent Politician of Singapore. Manoj Shyamalan is an exceptional Indian Hollywood director. Navanethem Pillai is a prominent Indian judge in the High Court of South Africa. Chandrasekar limit fame Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar is an Indian American astrophysicist. Nasser Hussain was an excellent Indian English cricket captain. Narain Karthikeyan is the first Indian Formula one motor racing driver. Chess wiz Viswanathan Anand happens to be an Indian grand master. Right, we're proud of our contribution to the country. But...

If Tamil people have Issues.. 

  • With both the Monsoons playing truant year after year, we are forced to plead other states to release at least only the agreed quantum of water to save our crops at stake. The Respected Supreme Court's Orders stay majestically in the paper. 
  • We've agreed to house Madras Atomic Power Plant, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Kudankulam Nuclear power project (yeah with great reluctance and protest still..) etc, despite all possible Hazards and Drawbacks. All these projects are controlled by Central Government owned entities that contribute power to the GRID. But when Tamilnadu has an energy crisis? Does it even matter to the Centre?
  • Tamilnadu fishermen get torched by SriLankan navy on a daily basis. Despite Tamilnadu's continual requests to Central government . Indian navy never gets instructed to protect/warn Tamil fishermen from/of the attack of SriLankan navy. 
  • "The most Shameful Act of India" in the United Nations was, when all other nations were voting to term the actions of SriLankan army as Genocide, India sidelined and betrayed our Tamil Brothers and Sisters by voting against it. 
  • Central Government's latest agenda with Tamilnadu can cripple us completely - Methane gas exploration. The Rice Bowl of Tamil Nadu can get destroyed completely (Hidden Agenda!?). Imagine this and for God'sake, we are having to deal either with a Mute MM Singh or with a Flight-Mode Modi to complain about our issues. 

We for Us 

We may speak different languages to our guests because that's what our culture taught us and we follow. But our very same culture forbids us to fall backwards pleading for unjust favours/fall flat submiting to unjust orders. So WE FIGHT.
After a wide social media campaign to promote the traditional bull sport, Tamil youth and students have spontaneously gathered at the Marina beach to conduct agitation and drum up support for Jallikattu. Besides that, thousands of youth have gathered throughout the state and hold rallies evoking support from many sections of people.

The Beginning of a New Era

The Vellore mutiny was the first instance of a large-scale revolt by Indian sepoys against the English East India Company. Today with the Tamil youth jumping onto the Protests, demanding the lift of Jallikattu Ban and trying to save the TAMIL culture, we see a revival in the Tamil history, the birth of a new era. A mere ordinance will/cannot not satisfy our youth. We don't want Ordinance, Kindly #AmendPCA (Respect-Culture)!

I'm Black ̶b̶u̶t̶ AND Beautiful. Care to Deny?

Are you an Indian? You cannot have missed your Mom shout at you "Don't go out in the Sun, you'll turn Dark". Only in India, being DARK is considered a fate worse than any other. Believe ME this attitude starts right from the cradle.

How did this come along? 

We live in a society that equates fairness with beauty. We must blame the multi-million dollar fairness cream industry for this stupidity spread strong amongst our people. Fairness Ads seem to be cultivating stereotypical beliefs among our people by glorifying fairer skin complexion and thereby promoting their products as savior for dark-skinned people.
What are these ADs doing to us? Good girl = Good Looks = Thin + Fair.
Fairness of skin tone has been associated with being sexy and attractive. To make the matter worse, fairness cream ads continue to project themselves as a source of confidence, self-esteem and chances of employability. The blatant message they spread by these Ads is Fair --> Success. Such STUPIDITY. And Know what? We are letting them succeed splendidly.

Let's speak Science 

Dark people possess more melanin than the light-skinned population and these Fairness cream ads promise to transform the user’s skin by reducing this melanin pigmentation. Neither do they speak up about the biochemical aftereffects nor do they come with a blatant disclaimer over the rampant use of fairness creams.

Let me tell you one little thing, if the use of cream does not do the fairness magic to you, the Cancer cells can definitely do it for you. Yes! True! Reduced number of melanin is directly linked to skin cancer and melanoma. In fact, the risk is so high that many of them develop life threatening skin cancers before and during their reproductive years.

Case Study

Fairness Creams in reality, are trying to make us believe their promise to reverse 50,000 years effect of evolution and migration in a phenomenally short duration of time by tinkering with Melanin.

Just read this Google Definition of ALBINO: an organism exhibiting deficient pigmentation; especially a human being that is congenitally deficient in pigment and usually has a milky or translucent skin. 
Statistical data suggest that,
  • * More than 90% of Albino individuals living near the equator in Africa will die in their 30s or before, mainly because of skin cancer. 
  • * Out of more than 500 Tanzanians with albinism, nearly all died of skin cancer before the age of 40.

What must we know? 

Skin complexion turns out to be adaptation in action. It is an evolutionary trait that resulted from natural selection and ultraviolet exposure over thousands of years. The lesser the radiation exposure, lighter the native population's skin color tends to be.

Are you in a Hotter region? Are you sad because your Baby is born Dark?
Any Babycentre community can stand proof for this. There is sure to be atleast one mother in distress over her child's complexion. In a way, I'm guilty too.. Of praying for a little Melanin reduction from my Daughter's complexion. I finally understood how stupid I was. We simply don't have to blame our Karma and feel totally lost.

How will the future be? 

My guilt paved way to write this article. After researching many fairness articles, I came to this conclusion - Nature loves my Child and wants her to survive as the Fittest. Who are we to deny? This is what I'll tell her when she grows up and thinks to try out any fairness atrocities. My sincere advice - Try changing your mindset, not your Child's skin tone. 

Mark my Words! There'll come a day when moisturisers and fairness creams get replaced by dark mud cake/paste in Ladies handbags.

How to keep ourselves cool?

Here are some pointers I collected from helpful Quorans.  
  • Avoid direct sun from 10 am to 2 pm, around 3Fm sea breeze will set in. 
  • Drink lot of water, buttermilk.. Eat water melon, palm fruit etc.
  • To escape from power cuts, keep an UPS connected to the fans in the house. 
  • Take bath twice daily to avoid stickiness, and change into thin cotton clothes. 
  • Wear cotton clothes and that too white in colour- best ones to keep away the heat.  
  • Eat mangoes and drink tender coconut during the day time.
  • Are you living on the top floor? Water the terrace every evening.
  • Avoid heavy food and maintain a light veg meal. 
  • There are quite a number of trees in Chennai park. Choose them. Nothing does good like natural tree shade.
Look at the last point. If you are a true Chennaite by heart, plainly reading that point should give you pain. If it did not, please don't read further and waste your time.

Read this news? Cyclone Vardah, which pounded the city at a wind speed of 110kmph, uprooted disastrously large number of trees. Cyclone Vardah had uprooted at least one lakh of the estimated 4.5 lakh trees in the city. The tree cover area of Chennai was already sparse, around 6.5-per cent and about one-fourth of it has vanished in the wake of the cyclone. Environmental activists are demanding a massive tree planting drive to regenerate lost green cover.

This method may not work instantly, like how your inverter works. This is more like investing for the future. We cannot/don't have to adopt the entire city like RadioCity people do. Let's make our locality Green.
